Motorcycle tours in Southern Europe with Unicorn Adventures Ltd

For 2006 the Unicorn Adventures Ltd team has developed a program of 6 tours taking place in Southern Europe, all starting from the French Riviera

The objective for 2006 was to provide a central theme for each tour around which we did select our favorite roads, curves, vistas and places to stay and visit.

One part of a motorcycle tour is the riding but not to be forgotten the second part: where to overnight and enjoy food and drink. Each hotel has been hand picked and checked by us to make sure you will have a great rest in lovely castles or *** to **** hotels.

The 2006 catalogue offers 6 products: Each tour has its own personality and character to enjoy!

Motorcycle tour in France - the Corsica Tour

Here is a description of the Unicorn Adventures Ltd Corsica Tour.

Have a look at the CorsicaTour PDF for the map and the whole description.

The following stage sequence may vary due to ferry arrival and departure times.
  • Day 1: the tour starts from the French Riviera on the ferry over the Mediterranean sea, for a 4 hours cruise which will take us to Bastia. We will get to St Florent, our first stop, by riding around the Cap Corse. St. Florent, with its port and soft sand beach, is called the St. Tropez of Corsica.
  • Day 2: From St Florent we will ride along the Agriates desert towards Porto. But before getting there we will have visited some wonderful mountain roads, great views and natural pools. After an exciting ride along the tiny, serpentine coastal roads we will discover Porto. Time for a good swim in the sea!
  • Day 3: For those interested it will be possible to take a boat ride to the wonderful Natural sanctuary of Scandola (belonging to the UNESCO patrimony since 1983) and the little town of Girolata. Then we will be back on the bikes and up into the mountains before getting back to the coast and Corsica’s main west coast town: Ajaccio, which offers great historical places to visit. Here, one can walk in the footsteps of Napoleon.
  • Day 4: After a ride on wonderful, corkscrewy roads, we will have a break in Propriano before starting to leave the west coast to climb up to Sartène, known as the most Corsican town.
  • Day 5: This is a rest day with a short ride to the most southern town of Corsica: Bonifaccio. After leaving your equipment in the hotel you will be able to walk around, visit the beautiful town centre, and go for a boat ride to visit the caves, the “falaises” (where the movie “Guns of Navarone” was shot in the sixties).
  • Day 6: The long day ride! We will cross half of the length of the island, and ride up the mountains, across wonderful forests and some natural pools to relax before we get to Corte, our final town in Corsica for a good night’s rest after a visit of the town.
  • Day 7: An early wake-up to enjoy some more circuitous roads before we get back to Bastia and take some time to visit that nice town. We will overnight at the Cap Corse southern part.
  • Day 8: Say farewell to Corsica before we get on the ferry back to the continent.

Motorcycle tour in France - the Alpine Passes

Here is a description of the Unicorn Adventures Ltd Alpine Passes Tour.

Have a look at the Alpine Passes Tour PDF for the map and the whole description.
  • Day 1: Very quickly after leaving the French Riviera we will start to climb into the Alps, following the Italian border, until we reach Briançon for the night. Briançon, the highest town in Europe, is situated at over 1300 metres above sea level.
  • Day 2: More than 6 mountain passes and the most famous French ski resorts are on the plate for this second day of riding. The end of the day will take us down to Annecy. At the edge of the turquoise Lac d'Annecy, bounded to the east by the turreted peaks of La Tournette and to the west by the long wooded ridge of Le Semnoz, Annecy is one of the most beautiful and popular resort towns of the French Alps.
  • Day 3: A short ride between lakes and the tour is back in the mountains chasing the passes (some of them among the most popular of the Tour de France). The night will be spent in Gap (home town of on of the biggest skydiving drop zones of France…for the daredevils we can organise a tandem jump). Gap is the highest prefecture in France, but also the largest city in the Southern Alps.
  • Day 4: Last leg of the tour, getting peacefully back to the French Riviera through even more mountain passes.

Motorcycle tour in France - The Provence and Camargue Tour

Here is a description of the Unicorn Adventures Ltd A Ride in Provence and Camargue Tour.

Have a look at A ride in Provence and Camargue Tour PDF for the map and the whole description.
  • Day 1: Starting from the French Riviera you will ride along the Côte d’Azur through little villages along winding roads, crossing the Rhone estuary towards the Saintes Maries de la Mer, especially famous for its oldest tradition of being the meeting place for the gypsy people. There are many ranches (called manades) where both bulls and horses are bred, and for the more adventurous, there is a windsurf speed canal waiting for you right next to the port!
  • Day 2: The tour will leave the Mediterranean coast to enjoy old Roman towns like Nîmes and Avignon with a stop in a jewel called Les Baux de Provence. The village is officially classified as "one of the most beautiful villages in France". Its cultural heritage is exceptionally rich, with 22 architectural treasures classified as "Historic Monuments" (including the church, chateau, town-hall, hospital, chapels, houses, doorways... without counting items of furniture and a collection of paintings). Les Baux covers 7 hectares and visitors can discover the main ruins of its dramatic past: the keep, Saracen towers, chapel, old war weapons... the history of Provence unfolds before your eyes amongst the rocks and stones. The night will be spent in Avignon, great city of the popes, and for centuries one of the major artistic centres of France. The city is filled with spectacular monuments and museums, countless impressively decorated buildings, ancient churches, chapels and convents, and more places to eat and drink than you could cover in a month.
  • Day 3: A nice day for a ride on little twisty roads to enjoy the motorcycles and the area, climbing the pre-Alpes towards Digne-Les-Bains, the préfecture of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. This is a town with a medieval heart and an even older history. In the early 19th century Digne was a luncheon stop for Napoléon (you may want to check our Napoleon Road). Tour Digne has a compact center and a beautiful setting, sitting beside the fast-flowing Bléone river and surrounded by forested mountains.
  • Day 4: The last day of the tour is dedicated to a bit of challenging riding down the Alps towards the Côte d’Azur, with a leg around the Verdon river canyon. This immense and magnificent canyon straddles the departments of Var and the Alpes de Hautes Provence. In the midst of a nature reserve, rich in flora and fauna, the scenery here is astonishing. The custodial villages nestled at the foot of the fault have maintained their original Provençal appeal. Before ending our tour we will of course enjoy a stop in Grasse, the perfume capital of the world.

Motorcycle tour in France - the Mediterranean Coast Tour

Here is a description of the Unicorn Adventures Ltd Mediterranean Coast Tour.

Have a look at the Mediterranean Tour PDF for the map and the whole description.
  • Day 1: As the Côte d’Azur unravels its roads before us, you will enjoy the wonderful cliffs, the sea, and the charming little villages of this beloved coast. The day will end in Cassis, but before getting there you will have experienced the route des Crètes high above the sea, with its fabulous panoramic views of the area. Cassis is a little seaside resort snuggled at the foot of a very tall cliff called Cap Canaille.
  • Day 2: A ride through the Camargue (see our Camargue Tour) will end in Languedoc, a region well known for its astounding Roman towns and monuments, as well as its wine and aperitifs! We will spend the night in Sète, the largest fishing port of Languedoc-Rousillon, also know as the Venice of Languedoc. The charm of Sète is in the effortless energy that spills from the canal, the sea, the streets, and the restaurants. It is no wonder that Georges Brassens, who is buried here, was imbued with song and word, and also that it provided the inspiration for Paul Valèry.
  • Day 3: Leaving the coast to climb slowly up the “Black Mountain,” we will visit the “Cité de Carcassonne”, following the Canal du Midi and driving through some of the historical towns on the way. Carcassonne and its Cité, built during the 5th century, has medieval fortifications that are ranked among Europe’s finest.
  • Day 4: Time to go up into the mountains along their twisting roads! After a day ride up the Pyrénées, the tour will stop in Andorra. This tiny principality in the Pyrénées -- a mere bump on the border between France and Spain – is one of the smallest countries in Europe, and has one of the highest standards of living in the world.
  • Day 5: After loading our van with the tax-free gifts from Andorra we will be back on the bikes on our way down the Pyrénées to the Mediterranean coast and the region of Roussillon, until we get to Béziers, the “Capital of vineyards and vine” and its cathedral.
  • Day 6: After leaving the coast, the tour takes the winding roads up the Cévènes, land of hills and valleys to reach Florac for the night. Florac is a real geological crossing of the schist Cévènnes in the South, the Mont Lozère in the North and the Causse Méjean plateau. It's also the place where the rivers Tarnon, Mimente and Tarn come together. The water flows cheerfully through the center of the town with little waterfalls and very big trout, giving it a unique character.
  • Day 7: The plan for this day is to cruise down the Cévènes, past the Rhône and to start to climb the Pré-Alps. The group will enjoy picturesque canyons and winding roads, spending the night in Sisteron. This site has been fortified since time immemorial; its citadel and the solitary bridge across the River Durance stand as a fearsome sentinel over the city. Way back when he cam bask into “business”, Napoléon's march passed through Sisteron (see also our Napoleon Road Tour).
  • Day 8: Time to head towards home and descend the Alps towards the French Riviera and the sea.

Motorcycle tour in France - the Napoléon Road Tour

Here is a description of the Unicorn Adventures Ltd Napoléon Road Tour.

Have a look at the Napoléon Road Tour PDF for the map and the whole description.
  • Day 1: From the French Riviera the tour will rejoin the Napoleon road which will take us up to Grenoble. Beautifully situated on the Drac and Isère rivers, and surrounded by mountains, Grenoble, the self-styled "capital of the Alps", is a lively, modern city (where the 1968 winter Olympic games took place).
  • Day 2: A day in the Vercors. Between Dauphiné and Provence, the massif of the Vercors extends like a natural fortress, it is reached by involutional roads perched on cliffs. As we come back to Grenoble for the second night, members of the group willing to rest can stay to enjoy this great town right in the middle of the mountains.
  • Day 3: The start of the climb to the Alps and some passes, stopping in Briançon which is the highest town in Europe situated at over 1300 metres above sea level. Briançon has an enchanting old town with cobbled streets, crafts and souvenir shops. Local produce includes goat’s and ewe’s cheese, honey and the après-dinner drink of “génépi”.
  • Day 4: From Briançon to the French Riviera by the French side of the Alps and some more nice passes.
